  • Details:  This is a very old and valuable English casserole.  It is a very sought after piece of Ironstone, made by John Maddock & Sons.  An elegant vegetable serving bowl, aka covered casserole, with a lovely embossed pattern and scalloped borders; and in unbelievable condition.  The backstamp shows the John Maddock & Sons logo used between 1880 and 1896, reads: "England, Royal Vitreous".  These pieces are typically not used for serving, today they are highly sought-after collectibles and proudly displayed and used as decor.  Hand washing is a must to maintain condition.  Perfect gift for an Ironstone collector.

Founded by John Maddock in 1830 Burslem, England, as Maddock & Edwards.  John had four sons, when the eldest joined the company, the co. name changed to J. Maddock and Son in 1855.  In 1870, another son joined the company, name was changed again to J. Maddock and Sons.  John Maddock Jr retired from the business in the 1870s and died in 1877. In 1896 the business was incorporated, and 'Ltd' was added to the name.  In 1904 the company was awarded a gold metal at the St. Louis Exhibition in USA.  They stayed in business for 150 years, went through two world wars, and many financial struggles, in 1981 they were purchased by Nubell Ltd, including all existing stock and rights to the Maddock and Royal Stafford name.
